I could never understand why people flocked to warm weather destinations over Spring Break. What’s so terrific about dipping your toes in the warm ocean, sipping umbrella-topped drinks by the pool and constant worry about that dreaded sunburn? Well, I guess if I really stretch my imagination I can fathom it at some level, at least deep in my sub-conscious. Particularly this winter. Unless you’ve been hibernating like Yogi the Bear the past few months, you know that very few Americans have escaped the wrath of Mother Nature. Even those safely nestled in the Deep South have experienced the shock and awe that come with finding yourself in a full-on blizzard. These guys don’t know what a snow plow is; have never owned a shovel and the only snowman their kids have ever known was named “Frosty.” The news was constantly filled with tragic tales of cars sliding off highways and people unable to reach their workplace for days.
While I could empathize with the angst many were feeling with every new major storm alert, these tales of blizzards sounded heavenly! It’s all in your perspective. We live in snow country here in the Yellowstone-Teton region. Our panic-button-pushing time comes when days pass without a winter storm or at least the promise of one. When Spring Break time arrives we are gloriously surfing a different kind of wave, the Teton Reef. As I speak, we’re in the throes of another amazing storm front trashing up against the Teton Mountains. While storms like this bring other regions to their knees, well, we’re simply reveling in the knee-deep powder.
For my money, March, and even well into April, is the best time to visit Teton Valley. Statistically, lots of new snow during this period is continually added to the charts but spring is definitely in the air. Days are longer (perfect for that après ski umbrella drink!), sun is warming (you’ll still take on that glorious bronze God/Goddess look, only with different tan lines!) and the sky takes on that cobalt blue hue that is as dramatic as the scenery itself. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, a neighbor to the east has already reached 350” of snow this season and Grand Targhee, our hometown ski area, is mere inches away from hitting that same mark. It appears both resorts will easily top their 500” average snowfall this season (we love it when snowfall records are broken!). So, you can see there’s plenty of incentive to spend your much-needed Spring Break at Teton Springs Lodge & Spa this time around.
The fact that this luxury eastern Idaho resort sits perfectly perched between the two Wyoming ski & snowboard giants is only one of many reasons. The value is also there. The nice folks at Teton Springs are filling their 52 room lodge over President’s Weekend with their value-packed “buy three nights and your fourth is absolutely free!” and have decided to extend this generous deal over Spring Break as well. It even gets better; the free night applies not just to the lodge rooms but to the one and two bedroom suites and the 3, 4 & 5 bedroom Luxury Mountain Log Homes that border this exquisite property. And whatever you do, visit the Stillwaters Spa at Teton Springs; their treatments and guest service easily rival any spa experience found in a resort destination.
Getting here is easy. Fly into the Jackson Hole or Idaho Falls Airport and Teton Springs is a mere skip, hop or jump (short drive too!) from both. World-class skiing is just one of the many delightful activities that you and your family will enjoy while visiting this extraordinary area.
When you do take that break from surfing the big white waves at Targhee be sure to check out the 5,000 wintering elk still taking up residence at the Nation Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole; you won’t see this phenomenon on any silly beach!
THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS DREAM VACATION STARTS HERE IN VICTOR, IDAHO!
Holiday cheer, romantic log cabins, sleigh ride dinners, helicopters & powder snow. Sounds like the recipe for that perfect Christmas holiday?! Teton Springs Resort makes it easy! Simply put, the setting at Teton Springs Resort right now could easily be the cover of a Hallmark Christmas greeting, with the card recipient saying out loud, “where is this?” All of the magical ingredients are in place. Snow blankets the landscape for as far as the eye can see. We’re not talking a thin, early December covering here; each new storm seems to cough out copious amounts of the Teton fluff we’ve become accustomed to around here – just not this much so soon. The snow laden trees sparkle at night, seemingly winking back at the staggering amount of stars that fill the entire night sky here in Yellowstone-Teton country.
The award-winning Headwaters golf course, the anchor for Teton Springs Resort, lies hidden beneath this quilt of blinding white and creates the 780 acres of open space that seems to extend forever into the horizon. Cross-country skis now glide over the manicured fairways and you’ll fill your lungs with the purest of fresh air as you propel your skate skis around the resort’s pristine Nordic track. For those who would rather walk than ride, strap on a pair of snowshoes and follow our resident winter hare as he heads home, past the 9th hole and into the adjoining Caribou-Targhee National Forest.
Given all this early season snow in the Tetons and surrounding mountains, there could be just the optimum Christmas gift under the tree this year for the well-behaved (and much loved) skier or snowboarder in your life! Looks like High-Mountain Heli Skiing will start their engines and take to the skies early this season, weeks early in fact. You’ll barely have your gifts unwrapped. The secret is out that this prestigious Jackson Hole based heli ski institution has moved their operation, lock stock & barrel, over to Teton Springs Resort this year. Now you can rest your head in one of the Lodge’s very cool guestrooms and suites and wake to the sound of the chopper landing in the parking lot, just steps from your room. Sign me up Santa!
There’s a bunch of ways to do the heli ski thing. Book a three day package at Teton Springs which includes a day of heli skiing, as well as a warm-up session at Teton Valley’s Grand Targhee, easily the powder snow Mecca of the West. Or, simply book your day of heli skiing, snowmobiling, lodge accommodations, or cabin, a-la-carte. After all, you may want to take a day or two to check out the neighborhood (like a day of skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort or snowmobiling in the Big Holes or a romantic dinner sleigh ride).
Mix and match plans are easily accommodated at Teton Springs Lodge & Spa. However, before you book anything, be sure to check out the luxury mountain cabins bordering this exquisite property; their extraordinary western décor could only be enhanced by a crackling fire, a well lit Christmas tree and enthusiastic carolers crowding the deck. These “cabins” are gorgeous.
Call the friendly guest services staff at Teton Springs Lodge & Spa. They’re experts at this stuff. They’ll also tell you how kids 12 and younger ski free at Targhee on one of Teton Springs many winter packages. And whatever you do, don’t forget the Stillwaters Spa and all the magic they perform; after a day of powder skiing you’ll relish that deep tissue massage, followed by a terrific meal in the warm and cozy Headwaters Grille.
Merry Christmas everyone from Teton Springs Lodge & Spa!
Teton Valley cabins, specifically the 3, 5 & 5 bedroom cabins at Teton Springs Resort, give a whole new meaning to the term “western cabin.” The romantic notion of a cabin in the woods – smoke billowing from the chimney, horses grazing in the pasture, the sound of a babbling brook, is appealing to all of us. With all of these elements in place – plus luxury, plus optimum location, plus resort amenities, plus onsite recreation, plus championship golf, the Signature Cabins now available at Teton Springs have raised the bar for not just Teton Valley cabins but for all of eastern Idaho.
Sheltered in the Aspens and the Caribou-Targhee National Forest as your backyard, in the heart of Teton Valley, cabins at Teton Springs offer the private retreat and spacious luxury living usually afforded to resort homeowners. Ideal for a family or group of friends, the western-influences cabins feature well appointed kitchens, whirlpool tubs, cozy gas fireplaces, and decks for entertaining or simply enjoying the view of the Grand Teton Mountains. However, there’s much to do, and lots to see; thundering waterfalls, glistening lakes and free flowing rivers and that’s all before lunch!
Our Teton Valley Cabins offer a Great Central Location to Adventure
Leaving the comfort of your Teton Valley cabins is never easy but you and the group will head north out of Victor, Idaho for a full day of exploration. But before you leave town, your first stop absolutely has to be the Victor Emporium, home of the famous huckleberry shake (President Ronald Reagan did on his trip through!). Along the way, the peaks of the Teton Range can be seen from miles away. Combine this drive with the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway for one of the most spectacular scenic routes in Idaho. At 68.9 miles, this drive is about 2.5 hours. Of course, capturing the wildlife and the splendor of eastern Idaho on film, and, you could be days. Not to worry.
