CALLING ALL WOMEN! IT’S TIME TO WALK, RUN AND HIKE ACROSS TETON VALLEY WITH ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST!
I’ve never been one to sign up for a camp, of any kind. As a kid I frustrated my parents year after year with my total lack of interest in summer camps of any nature. I was never even remotely lured by the glossy brochures showing kids clearly having a blast playing in a sparkling lake and eating all the s’mores they could ever want around an evening campfire. It’s not that there wasn’t virtue in the prospects of meeting new friends, perhaps learning to build my own cabin, or trying to be the next rock star or basketball prodigy. I just wasn’t intrigued by the group dynamic thing. I guess it’s the same reason why I’ve never joined a gym or should I say “athletic club,” as they’re so fashionably called these days.
Well, my mom will finally be happy. I’ve found a camp that I’m doing cartwheels over and can’t wait to sign up for, s’mores or no s’mores. It’s the “Just for Women Walking, Running & Fitness Camp” happening this June 2-5 at Teton Springs Lodge & Spa. You don’t have to be an athlete to have heard of the camp’s host, Lisa Smith-Batchen. Lisa lives in Teton Valley and is one of North America’s greatest women’s (and men’s too) running and fitness instructors to have ever roamed the planet. She’s also one of the greatest runners to have ever roamed the planet. I’m also sure given Lisa’s super-human racing resume, that she has literally circled the globe many times over the old fashioned way, putting one foot in front of the other.
This camp certainly isn’t Lisa’s first rodeo, as she has hosted, along with her husband Jay Batchen (also an elite ultra-runner), numerous running and fitness camps in Teton Valley (for kids too!). It’s all part of their Dreamchasers Outdoor Adventure Club and while Lisa’s accomplishments are too numerous to mention I’m compelled to list a few. You’ll also note that some of Lisa’s most ambitious goals and proudest achievements are not about being one of the world’s premier ultra-runners, or the recognition she continues to receive that continuously drives her; it’s more about the humanitarian efforts she has spearheaded on behalf of the world’s poor and needy, particularly the children.
A mere “sampling” of Lisa Smith Batchen’s professional accomplishments:
- Two 1st place finished in Badwater Ultra marathons (competed in 9)
- First and only American female to win Marathon des Sables Ultra marathons
- 1st person to ever run from Las Vegas to Mt. Whitney
- Wasatch Front 100 Mile Endurance Run
- Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race
- Hawaiian Ironman Championships
- Created the Dreamchasers Foundation – Dreamchasers is dedicated to raising funds to help needy women and children around the world to survive and succeed
- "Running Hope Through America” – completed a 2,500 mile run in two months raising money for orphans
Lisa’s walk, run and hiking camp will be beneficial, fun, inspirational, and just overall terrific for beginners to advanced runners of all ages. Participants will be partnered with women of the same ability so interested gals out there shouldn’t be intimidated in any way; this isn’t your hard-core run to the top of the Grand Tetons kind of camp (Lisa does offer those too!). Lisa’s guest coaches include Barbra Metz Lindquist, also a valley resident, and a former Olympic Triathlete (Athens, Greece 2003 games) and Doctor Annie Fenn, a Jackson Hole, Wyoming Women’s Health Practitioner for over 20 years. I know all of these women personally, and frankly, you couldn’t ask for a more dynamic team to lead this fitness charge.
The other huge benefit to this camp is you’ll get to spend three nights in the deluxe Teton Springs Lodge & Spa and all the amenities of this year-round resort environment.
After your yoga class, hike and fitness sessions with Lisa, head into the Stillwaters Spa & Salon for that well-deserved sports massage or take a dip in the pool or a soak in the hot tub. It’s all here for the taking.
So, start this summer off with a fitness bang! For a complete run down on the second annual “Just for Women Walking, Running & Fitness Camp” and a chance to hike, bike and run on the most gorgeous trails in the northern Rockies. Visit Dreamchaserevents or book your package with the nice folks at Teton Springs Lodge & Spa.
Hey, after this camp, you may just join that gym!
A LIFT & LODGE PACKAGE AND A HOLIDAY ART SHOW – WOW!
Who could have written a better script than the one that is playing out this ski season?! We take it for granted that Grand Targhee is going to be the first ski and snowboard area to open in the region; their historical track record speaks for itself. However, this season they’re even defying the odds for how much snow has fallen in the Tetons in November, a month known more for turkey and dressing and Black Friday frantic Christmas shopping than it is for all mountain skiing.
It hasn’t happened in years, if ever, that even this powder snow Mecca in Alta, Wyoming has been able to open their entire mountain, running all lifts by Thanksgiving weekend. Ah, what a holiday season indeed we’re enjoying here in Teton Valley and it only promises to get better! Pre Christmas is also the optimum time to stay at Teton Springs and have a powder-filled and mellow day on Targhee’s slopes. We just happen to have the perfect Lift and Lodge Package for this getaway and it sure beats hanging at the mall!
Speaking of Christmas shopping. This Saturday, December 4th, so happens to present the perfect opportunity to scoop up those special gifts for all of your loved ones, and maybe even pick up a treat or two for yourself! Last year at the Teton Springs Lodge & Spa Holiday Art Show I was able to find unique treasures for literally everyone on my list. Who needs Macy’s and the other run-of-the-mill mega retailers when you can choose from a variety of hand-made treats crafted by local artist in our very own community – jewelry, custom hats & scarves, pottery, oil paintings, pillows and the list goes on. Santa is coming too and kids can even make their own tree decorations. The Stillwaters Spa & Salon staff is also hosting an “open house” in conjunction with this event and has cool Gifts and Gift Certificates wrapped and ready for under the tree. Who in their right mind wouldn’t covet a deep-tissue massage or a hydraquench treatment for Christmas, because after all, reindeer sweaters are so out!
Here’s the schedule for the festivities this weekend at Teton Springs Lodge & Spa.
- 10-3 HOLIDAY ARTS & CRAFTS SHOW – Featuring dynamic art & jewelry by local artists
- 10-5 OPEN HOUSE AT THE STILLWATERS SPA – discounted Holiday Gift Packages & Spa Gift Certificates wrapped and ready for under the tree
- 11-3 FREE CHILDRENS’ CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT CRAFTS – browse the craft fair while your kids create their own handmade ornaments!
- 12 – 2 SANTA CLAUS VISITS TETON SPRINGS! – Santa makes a special visit to the Lodge & Spa with FREE Polaroid shots with Jolly-Old- Saint-Nick!
- 11-2 CHILI BAR LUNCH – Chef John Wentworth is serving up his home made scrumptious chili ($7 for adults/$5 kids 6-12 & kids 5 & younger eat FREE!)
- 1-2 TURKEY BOWLING AT VALLEY OF THE TETONS LIBRARY – roll that strike with a Teton Springs Lodge sponsored turkey and a special prize is yours!
We’re partners with our friends at the City of Victor on this Holiday Festival so check in with them for a full schedule of downtown events:787-2940 and don’t miss the fireworks! See you at Teton Springs Lodge & Spa this weekend! Call 787-7888 for reservations and Holiday festivities.
“OFF SEASON” HAS A WHOLE NEW MEANING AT TETON SPRINGS RESORT!
I understand logically why the hospitality industry calls post summer, specifically October and November, the “off” season, aka the “shoulder” season. Now granted, shoulder season will definitely vary according to the travel spot you’re eyeballing. But for the majority of the universe, the fall season is when business tends to slow way down in most destination areas. Kids head back to school so mom and dad are distracted by soccer games, PTO meetings, homework and trying to concoct that perfect Lady Gaga Halloween costume. However, if you don’t fall into the parent category, or for responsible moms and dads who can break away weekends with the kids in tow, there’s no better time to travel in what I personally like to refer to as the “on” season!
The law of “supply and demand” dictates that you’re almost guaranteed better value, in just about every category, when your travel schedule is opposite of the tour bus crowd. Air fares are more reasonable and lodging at just about every destination hotel and resort is not only available for the taking but suddenly delightfully more affordable. I also find the service element more enhanced as well; the “locals” now have more time to give the personalized attention we all cherish as travelers. In fact, at most places in the slow off season, the staff even seem to crave the interaction with out-of-towners. This is the time of year when secrets are divulged, and despite being a visitor, you’re suddenly an insider. There’s also room to spread out in the hot tubs!
Teton Springs Lodge & Spa, in the village center of Teton Springs Community, is now in the throes of the “shoulder” season. Granted, the Headwaters Golf Club is put to bed so that the staff can prepare this award-winning course for its winter hibernation. But the Lodge, Stillwaters Spa and Salon & Headwaters Grille are all standing at attention and you couldn’t ask for a more spectacular time of year to be in this Yellowstone-Teton region. Mother Nature continues to smile on Teton Valley and kisses us with day after day with sunny skies, moderate temps, and brilliant fall colors unlike anything I’ve witnessed in years. It’s a light jacket for an afternoon mountain bike ride and for that breathtaking hike into the adjacent Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Just don’t get so caught up taking in the fall foliage that you miss seeing the resident moose with her calf trotting up the golf course. The trout in our ponds are also less wary so be sure to pack that fly rod, and for the die-hard fishermen, there’s literally no better time than now to fish our local rivers. We’ll even tell you what flies to bring!
So, if you’re one of the lucky ones who can travel during this more mellow, but no less worthy time of year, it’s optimum timing for that road trip. And, in keeping with the spirit and tradition of the “off season,” Teton Springs Lodge & Spa would love to pamper you with incredible value-added packages. A few of my favorites:
“STAY & DINE” PKG: $78. per person (dbl occupancy) – NOW thru 12- 16th
- One night lodging in a deluxe Lodge Room (always ask about affordable upgrades to a one bedroom suite!)
- Two course dinner at Headwaters Grille – soup/salad/entrée/coffee or tea
“FALL INTO THE SPA” PKG: $169 per person (dbl occupancy) – NOW thru 12-16
- One night lodging in a deluxe Lodge room (only $25 upgrade to suite!)
- 60 minute Deep Tissue or Swedish Message (a Facial would work too!)

Be sure to check out the other amazing offers. Winter is right around the corner. How does heli skiing directly from Teton Springs sound?
Remember, it’s always the “on season” here at Teton Springs Resort!
